Should you really wear white when it's hot? The science behind summer outfits.

In summer, we often hear that we should wear light-colored clothes to stay cooler. But is this true? Why does a white t-shirt feel cooler while a black one seems to attract heat? The answer lies in colors... and in light.

Why do light-colored clothes keep you cooler?

Colors aren't just about style

Each color absorbs or reflects part of the sunlight, which also carries energy—and ultimately, heat. White and light colors reflect most of the light rays, while black and dark colors absorb almost all of them.

In practice, if you wear a black t-shirt in full sun, it will absorb the light... and thus heat up. You can feel it by touch: black fabric left in the sun becomes very hot. Conversely, white fabric stays noticeably cooler because it reflects the light.

Light is also heat

The sun emits visible light but also infrared rays, invisible to the naked eye but very much present. These are the rays that heat our skin and clothes.

Light-colored clothing reflects much of this energy, while dark-colored clothing absorbs it. Result: the temperature on the fabric's surface rises faster, which also warms the air near the body.

But beware: it's not just about color!

Even though color is important, the fabric and cut of the clothes also matter. Loose-fitting clothing allows air to circulate around the body, which helps dissipate heat. Light, breathable fabrics (like cotton or linen) are also more effective at keeping a cool feeling.

For example: a very loose black linen t-shirt can sometimes be more comfortable than a tight synthetic white one.

So, how should you dress when it's very hot? Ideally, opt for:
- Light-colored clothes (white, beige, pastel)
- Made of natural materials
- And not too tight, to let air flow

Now you understand why people in very hot regions of the world have been dressing in white... for centuries!
