Our largest constructions on Earth—from giant solar farms to endless agricultural fields to cities glowing at night—could, without our intending it, be signals to extraterrestrial intelligences. Seen from space, these traces of our activity might reveal our presence to potential observers even very far away.

As early as the 19th century, scientists considered deliberately using such megastructures to communicate with extraterrestrials. Proposals involved tracing enormous geometric figures on the Earth's surface, visible from the Moon or Mars. For example, mathematician Karl Friedrich Gauss supposedly suggested representing the Pythagorean theorem by deforesting vast expanses in Siberia. Although the authenticity of this idea is uncertain, it illustrates an early approach to contacting an extraterrestrial civilization.
Douglas Vakoch, president of METI International, recalls that other more spectacular visions were put forward. For instance, there were ideas to dig large canals in the Sahara, fill them with kerosene, and set them ablaze to send a light signal from the dark side of the Earth. These projects, though never realized, show how long humanity has dreamed of making itself noticed in the Universe.

In 1896, polymath Francis Galton published an article in the journal Fortnightly Review entitled "Intelligible Signals Between Neighbouring Stars." He argued that signals should be inherently understandable to any advanced intelligence. His ideas, though controversial due to his eugenicist past, influenced reflections on interstellar communication.
Today, our modern infrastructure—data centers, immense commercial zones—could inadvertently play the same role. Perhaps an extraterrestrial civilization is already observing us, interpreting our constructions as beacons.
