OpenAI has taken a new step by transforming ChatGPT into a personal assistant. Thanks to the "Tasks" feature, the AI can now manage reminders and recurring actions, simplifying daily organization.

This novelty marks a turning point in the evolution of ChatGPT, which transitions from a simple conversational tool to a digital companion. Users can now schedule tasks, receive notifications, and get automated suggestions. This advancement brings ChatGPT closer to traditional virtual assistants while retaining its unique text generation capabilities.

A practical and intuitive feature

The "Tasks" feature allows users to create one-time or recurring reminders with just a few clicks. For example, you can ask ChatGPT to send you a weather report every morning or remind you of an important date. Tasks are executed automatically, even if you're not logged in.

ChatGPT can also suggest actions based on your conversations. These suggestions, which you can accept or decline, make the tool more personalized. Users maintain control over their tasks, being able to modify, suspend, or delete them at any time.

An exclusive for paying subscribers

For now, "Tasks" is reserved for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. This feature relies on GPT-4o, meaning the usage limits of the chosen plan apply here as well. Users can have up to 10 active tasks simultaneously.

Available on web, iOS, Android, and MacOS versions, "Tasks" will soon arrive on the Windows app. OpenAI specifies that this feature is still in beta, encouraging users not to rely entirely on it for critical reminders.

Towards a more autonomous AI

OpenAI is laying the groundwork for agentic AI, where artificial intelligences no longer just respond to requests but act proactively. This evolution could transform ChatGPT into an assistant capable of managing tasks, both in personal and professional spheres.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently mentioned the emergence of AI agents in the job market by 2025. This feature seems to be a first step towards that future.

By launching "Tasks," OpenAI is directly challenging virtual assistants like Apple's Siri or Amazon's Alexa. However, these are currently integrating generative AI features to remain competitive.

To go further: What is agentic AI?

Agentic AI refers to an artificial intelligence capable of acting autonomously to accomplish complex tasks. Unlike traditional AIs that simply respond to requests, AI agents can plan, execute, and adjust their actions based on set objectives.

These systems are designed to interact with digital or physical environments. For example, an AI agent can navigate the internet, manage calendars, or even control connected devices. OpenAI, with its "Tasks" feature, is laying the foundation for this technology. By enabling ChatGPT to manage reminders and recurring actions, the company is exploring the beginnings of agentic AI.

In the long run, AI agents could integrate into the job market (cf. our article on the subject), automating processes and freeing humans from repetitive tasks. This perspective opens immense possibilities while raising ethical and practical questions about their use.
