Grasshoppers: the key to a healthier future diet? Recent research suggests that these insects may lead us to rethink our nutritional approach.
A recent study conducted by the University of Dschang (Cameroon) reveals surprising findings about the benefits of grasshoppers. Published in Food Science of Animal Products, this research examines the replacement of fishmeal with grasshopper meal in animal feed.
The experiment lasted 12 weeks and involved 206 rats divided into three groups. One group was fed Ruspolia nitidula grasshopper meal, another group was given Clupea harengus fishmeal, and the last group received a protein-deficient diet.
The results showed significant improvements for the grasshopper-fed rats. Their libido significantly increased, with more frequent reproductive behaviors, surpassing the other groups.
In terms of sleep quality, the grasshopper-consuming rats experienced longer and more restorative nights. Improvements were also noticeable in the condition of their fur, with 94.58% of the grasshopper-fed rats' fur in excellent condition compared to much lower rates in the other groups (5.55% for the fishmeal-fed rats, and 0.27% in the third group).
Another highlight of the study was the greater weight gain in the grasshopper-fed rats, indicating better overall health. These results illustrate the nutritional potential of grasshoppers as an alternative protein source.

Dr. Ngnaniyyi Abdoul, the lead researcher, emphasized that these findings highlight the significant health benefits of edible insects like Ruspolia nitidula. Not only do these insects meet nutritional needs, but they also provide notable health benefits.
This research opens up interesting prospects for the future of food. In addition to their potential for animal feed, grasshoppers could play a role in fighting human malnutrition, especially in resource-poor areas.
What is Ruspolia nitidula grasshopper meal?
Ruspolia nitidula grasshopper meal is a product derived from grasshoppers, specifically ground to create a concentrated protein source. This meal is used as a dietary supplement for animals and could also serve in human nutrition.
It is rich in proteins, essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, offering a nutritious alternative to traditional protein sources like meat and fish. The benefits include a reduced environmental impact and greater sustainability compared to conventional livestock farming.
Why is grasshopper meal considered a sustainable alternative?
Grasshopper meal is considered a sustainable alternative for several reasons.
First, insects like grasshoppers require far fewer resources, such as water and food, compared to traditional livestock.
Second, their farming produces fewer greenhouse gases and less waste.
Finally, grasshoppers can be raised in large quantities in controlled environments, providing an efficient and eco-friendly protein source. This approach is particularly beneficial in areas where food resources are limited.
