Giant sequoias, those vegetal colossi native to California, are surprisingly thriving well in the UK, according to a recent study. These majestic trees, introduced 160 years ago, play a crucial role in carbon capture, with an average absorption of about 187 pounds (85 kilograms) per year. This discovery opens interesting prospects for forest management and the fight against climate change.
The study, led by scientists from UCL in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and published in Royal Society Open Science, examines for the first time the growth and resilience of giant sequoias in the UK. Despite their endangered status in their native Californian habitat, the UK is now home to around half a million of these giants, with new trees being planted regularly due to their popularity with the public.
Sequoias are among the tallest and longest living organisms on Earth, reaching heights of up to 295 feet. Their rapid growth and exceptional longevity, which can surpass 3,000 years, make them major players in carbon capture over long periods. Moreover, their resistance to fire allows them to survive fires that would devastate other tree species.
To assess the adaptation of sequoias to the British climate, which is milder and with greater precipitation variability than their native California, the team visited three sites in the UK. They used terrestrial laser scanners to map in 3D and precisely measure the height and volume of 97 representative trees. This advanced technology allowed a precise assessment of their carbon sequestration capacity without harming the trees.

The results show that sequoias in the UK effectively capture carbon, with growth rates comparable to those observed in their natural habitat, even though climatic and ecological conditions vary. This resilience suggests that sequoias could continue to thrive and play a significant role in mitigating climate change.
These findings underline the importance of long-term tree planting and management in strategies to combat climate change. They also highlight the potential of giant sequoias not only for their beauty and historical interest but also for their significant forthcoming environmental contribution.
