opposite

Hi!
Is it possible to translate the french term "l'opposé" by "the opposite"?
(here "opposite" is taken as a noun).
For example in Mathematics? "The opposite of r is -r".
My dictionary indicates "opposite" only as an adjective, so I have a doubt.
