✈️ NASA opens its first major wind tunnel in over 40 years

NASA has just opened a new wind tunnel dedicated to studying the behavior of vehicles in flight. Located at NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia, it will test aircraft, drones, rockets, and space capsules. It is the first major facility of this kind built by the U.S. agency in more than 40 years.

Named the Flight Dynamics Research Facility, this infrastructure combines the functions of two older Langley wind tunnels. Researchers will be able to observe models mounted on a support, as well as vehicles moving freely in the airflow.

Its test chamber measures about 6.1 meters. This volume leaves more space around the scale models and limits wall-related disturbances. According to NASA, this configuration should improve measurement accuracy and allow the use of larger, more detailed, and heavier models.

The maximum airspeed reaches about 188 km/h. That is twice as much as in the facilities being replaced. This capability is intended in particular to reproduce the behavior of vehicles flying at high altitude, where less dense air changes their stability and response to controls.

In practice, four 750-horsepower motors power the tunnel. Each drives a 4.3-meter-diameter fan equipped with eight carbon fiber blades. Their low mass allows rapid and precise variations in flow speed during free-flight tests.

Experiments may focus on the stability of an aircraft, recovery after loss of control, or the deployment of a parachute. Capsules returning from space are also among the objects studied. Their behavior during atmospheric entry, descent, and landing can thus be examined with scale models before more costly tests.

NASA also plans to use the wind tunnel for autonomous aircraft, military aircraft, experimental demonstrators called X-planes, and certain vehicles intended for Mars. The facility does not, however, directly reproduce a complete flight. It serves to isolate aerodynamic phenomena and compare computer models with controlled observations.

The 2,323-square-meter building was built with the U.S. General Services Administration. It is part of the modernization of the Langley campus and replaces aging equipment.

188 km/h doesn't seem like much for testing rockets, but so it's mainly the stability at low speeds they're looking at?

TitouB, I was wondering the same thing. I imagine that for a parachute or a descending device, it's precisely the moments when it goes slower that are important?

TitouB yes, and above all, it is not a wind tunnel designed to reproduce the actual speed of a rocket. Here, the main interest seems to be seeing how a model reacts when it can move freely in the flow.

When the mockups fly freely in the wind tunnel, can they really go off course and hit a wall? That must be quite stressful to test 😅

Biscotte, I asked myself the same question. I hope they plan a good margin around the mock-ups, because at 188 km/h, the slightest shock must cause damage.

I had visited a small wind tunnel during an open house, and what surprised me most was the noise, even with ear protection. With four huge fans here, it must be something else!

QJ yes, the scale significantly changes the speed reading. I would be curious to know up to what mass they can let a model fly freely without support.

QJ yes, the size of the mockup really matters. And being able to let it move freely rather than fixing it seems especially useful to see unforeseen reactions.
