Selon Amphibian Species of the World c'est la seule espèce du genre Allophryne et de la famille des Allophrynidae.

Cette espèce se rencontre au Guyana, au Venezuela, au Suriname, en Guyane et au nord-est du Brésil; ainsi que probablement en Bolivie et en Colombie.
