Captivité
Des autorisations spécifiques sont requises pour l'élevage. La législation française oblige à la possession d'un "Certificat de capacité pour l'entretien d'animaux d'espèces non domestiques". Les Theraphosidae peuvent être maintenus dans d'excellentes conditions chez soi. Cependant ils demeurent des animaux non-domestiques au regard de la loi. De nos jours, certains les gardent en terrarium comme nouvel animal de compagnie ou « NAC ». Parmi les espèces les plus prisées, citons Grammostola rosea ou Brachypelma smithi. La chasse intense de B. smithi lui valu d'être protégée par la convention de Washington en annexe 2 (Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d'extinction).
